Representative Malinowski and House Delegation Hold Field Roundtable on Gateway

Statement

Date: May 3, 2019
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Infrastructure

Congressman Tom Malinowski, Chair of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Peter DeFazio (D-OR), Chair of the House Appropriations Committee Nita Lowey, and a delegation of House members held a field roundtable to discuss the need to move the Gateway Project forward.

"In New Jersey, we've long known that this project must be built," Congressman Malinowski said. "The difference now is that the House of Representatives knows it, too, and is determined to use our leverage to make it happen. I'm glad we had a chance to show the Committee how dire the situation is, and I am gratified by Chairman DeFazio's commitment that funding for the Gateway Project will be included in the planned Infrastructure Bill."

During the roundtable, New Jersey governor Phil Murphy urged federal support for Gateway, and allowing states to attribute federal transportation loans towards their share of jointly funded large-scale infrastructure projects, which the Department of Transportation has inexplicably refused to do for the Gateway Project. Congressman Malinowski's first bill, the Transportation Funding Fairness Act (TFFA) would fix this problem.

Congressman Malinowski used this opportunity to highlight how constituents across the 7th district are affected by the delay of the Gateway Project. Representatives from the Raritan Valley Line Mayor's Alliance were present to shine a spotlight on the difficulties commuters face getting into the city due to limited tunnel capacity.
